Breeds within The Flock

I run a diverse flock comprising of traditional native breeds, rare breeds, and carefully selected commercial bloodlines.

Breeds currently include:

Herdwick • Badgerface Welsh Mountain • Balwen • Kerry Hill • Welsh Hill Speckled • North Country Cheviot • Boreray • Castlemilk Moorit • Pure Dutch Spotted • Graded Dutch Spotted

Alongside selected commercial breeding lines including Texel Mule, Aberfield and Innovis.

Each breed contributes something different, whether that is hardiness, conservation value, maternal ability, commercial performance or suitability for smallholder flocks.

Why rare breeds matter

Many of the breeds we keep today have become rare not because they are unsuitable, but because modern farming has favoured systems that prioritise speed of growth and uniformity.

Rare breeds typically grow more slowly, produce fewer lambs and thrive on grass-based systems better rather than intensive feeding programmes. While this may make them less attractive to large-scale commercial farming, it makes them exceptionally valuable for conservation grazing and sustainable land management.

These sheep help maintain flower-rich grasslands, support insect populations, improve biodiversity and preserve an important part of Britain's agricultural heritage.

By keeping, breeding and using these sheep productively, we help ensure their future for generations to come.

SHEEP WITH A PURPOSE

Conservation at the heart of everything we do.

Our sheep play a vital role in managing flower-rich meadows, chalk grassland and conservation sites throughout the Chiltern Hills.

Working alongside organisations including Natural England and BBOWT, we manage our grazing to improve biodiversity, support wildlife habits and maintain traditional landscapes.

For us sheep are more than livestock - they are a vital part of the landscape.
